Adobe Illustrator tutorial

Adobe Illustrator tutorial: Create repeating patterns for skate deck art

Intro

Skate decks are a mini art canvas on wheels – and some of the hottest designers around have honed their talents in pursuit of the status of design legend in the half-pipe circuit. Yet creating deck art is more than recreating yet another urban art scene and slapping it onto a strip of maple. This speedy canvas should be home to more imaginative renderings,.
This masterclass shows you how to use repeating, tiled patterns based on vector workings of real-world objects. By taking the everyday, such as vegetables and kitchen utensils in this case, and reworking them as stylized vector art, you can add a real twist and create some thought-provoking art.
After designing the objects, next comes the part that, while requiring patience, is like working with a digital jigsaw puzzle. Thanks to some clever tiling techniques and tricks, you be able to turn a few vector objects into a multi-layered, highly complex design that will have some people scratching their heads.
Some advice – stick to bright, contrasting colour palettes for maximum impact, and ensure that objects are a mix of short and long – adding pace to the composition.
Once done, head to your nearest skate emporium and prepare to dazzle with your astounding deck.

Zodiaclaw by Zaher Almajed

Today's typeface of choice, Zodiaclaw, was created by art director Zaher Almajed. Inspired by lions claws, Almajed designed the font for 'those who want to be different'.

Almajed comments on Behance: "With some old classic European touches, Zodiaclaw is a humanist typeface that's based on traditional calligraphic forms, but with some new features in its shapes and strokes that provide a more open, elegant look."
Zodiaclaw is available to download for free over on Behance.

Peter Sanders [ Photographer ]

Peter Sanders began his career in the mid 1960s as one of London's key photographers of rock musicians. His pictures of Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, The Rolling Stones, The Who and many others performing are classics of the genre.

In 1970, he set off for India, cameras in hand. He travelled for seven months. This trip became a spiritual odyssey that led him onto Morocco and thereafter to the Holy cities of Makkah and Madinah, where he photographed the hajj, at a time when few professional photographers had access to Islam's holiest sanctuaries.

For the last two years, Peter Sanders Photography began the immense task of scanning and thus digitalizing his vast collection of over a quarter of a million transparencies to create islamicimages.com which will be the first on-line website dedicated to the Islamic world. Once it is launched, historical and other important collections will be added. Estimated launch date  2013.
